Comparison of α diversity between conventional and HMbmice reveals higher diversity within conventional microbiota. A Welch two-sample t test was used to determine significance between the groups: observed OTUs, p < 0.001; Chao1 estimator (richness), p = 0.143; inverse Simpson (biodiversity), p < 0.001; and Pielou’s evenness index, p <0.001 (evenness of relative abundance). Holm correction applied to p values to account for multiple inference. Singletons were not removed for α analysis as they are required for the Chao1 estimator
