The gut microbiota is dominated by Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Fusobacteria, three phyla which occur only at low abundance in the water. b Bacterial diversity (number of ASVs) is higher in the water compared to fish guts. Among Midas cichlid species, there is little variation, only A. citrinellus from Lake Managua shows remarkably reduced bacterial diversity
