Staining and examination of macaque intestines for mannose and fucose indicates the altered presence of fucose in ICD. Proximal colon sections were stained with 10 μg/mL FITC-labeled Ulex europaeus agglutinin 1 or concanavalin A to visualize fucose and mannose, respectively, and counterstained with DAPI. Slides were imaged with a confocal microscope at the same FITC channel voltage setting for each lectin. Five micrographs were analyzed from each animal to calculate a background-corrected crypt mean pixel intensity as described under the “Methods” section. a Representative micrographs showing sections from control and ICD animals stained for mannose or fucose.
