Age-associated bacterial succession of distinct longevity phenotypes. Honey bee host differences (pink panels) reflect aging physiology. In the context of life history theory, workers are literally the “disposable soma,” while queens represent reproduction [10]. Vertical arrows indicate the direction of change with increasing age. Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium are listed in the blue panels and Proteobacteria in the yellow panels. All listed bacterial groups differ significantly in ratio abundance. The microbiota of the short-lived worker phenotype represents a meta-analysis of Apis mellifera gut libraries from Kwong et al. [19]. Queens were analyzed in the present study (see Table 1)
